“Auròra” - A mindful installation

   2023
The complexity of modern life places great pressure on our psyche. Most people perceive the idea of doing nothing as boring at best and frightening at worst. Being busy has become the new idea of success, yet it appears to be undermining our well-being.

The best way to get rid of our restlessness is to introduce in our life quiet moments when we stop multitasking and consciously focus on a single task.

This installation offers a counterbalance, and by allowing ourselves to be enchanted by the rhythm of movement, we give our mind a chance to recover from the overstimulation we encounter everyday. The perception of movement will lead to an hypnotic and meditative state, that will make one eventually forgets time and space.

The light is naturally generated by bioluminescent micro-organisms (Photobacterium species), that emit light when provided with oxygen. These bacteria were carefully isolated from fish and grown at the TU Delft Science Centre, under the guidance of Richard Groen and Teresa van Dongen.

Auròra is a visualization of the power of science and nature and the potential of combining them with design to improve people's lives.
